As you all know we lost our dear friend and colleague, Barry Gauthier from UW Oshkosh, the beginning of this year. The UMMA Board attended his memorial service in February and presented a check, in his memory, to his wife, Billie.
The 2018 UMMA conference was hosted by Madison Area Technical College in Madison WI. A late winter storm created some travel issues for a few, but those that attended had a terrific time and great educational sessions.
On Saturday we had the opportunity to see The House On the Rock in Spring Green. Sunday we had sessions then took a trip to the Mouse House cheese store. There we sampled many WI made specialty cheeses, as well as, the good old staples. Cheese curds, homemade fudge, and specialty sausages were also available to taste test. Everyone left with a smile.
Monday sessions continued. We held a dinner banquet at the beautiful Edgewater Hotel, overlooking Lake Mendota on the north side of the city. We also had a spectacular, unobstructed view of the state Capital, just three blocks away.
Tuesday we wrapped up with morning sessions, then proceeded to tour of the University of WI Bulk Mail Center. We closed with a tour of the Madison Area Technical College Mail Center. Lunch was provided in their new cafeteria. As a bonus, we also go to tour the brand new baking facility for our Baking and Decorative Arts degree and were treated to a specially crafted sweet.
Dave and Ingrid Stalle informed us that they would be officially retiring from the mailing industry and Third Coast North/The Mail Store. They have been such terrific supporters of UMMA and NACUMS over the years; we will surely miss them. Many of us have become personal friends with them over the years. We wish them the very best!!
We also Have a moment of silence and a presentation of a plaque for Barry Gauthier, who contributed endless hours to UMMA and NACUMS. Billie, his wife, and daughter Cherie were unable to attend due to the winter storm. We did a video chat with them and shed a few tears. We all miss Barry!!!
